How can design help communicate science?

Live debate between Science Communication graduates from Imperial College and MA Communication Design students from Central Saint Martins

Anne Odling-Smee co-directed and chaired this feisty debate between Science Communication graduates from Imperial College and MA Communication Design students from CSM, held at the Hunterian Museum in the Royal College of Surgeons, London. Guests included representatives from the Royal Society, the Wellcome Trust, the Crick Institute, the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum, Imperial College, the Royal Society of Arts, The Royal College of Arts, Cancer Research UK and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

This event marks the launch of a new Design Science Reseach Group at CSM, and through that an ongoing collaboration between CSM and Science Communicators from Imperial College.

Linnean Society Christmas Lecture: Can design help science?

This forthcoming lecture is based on the subject of Anne Odling-Smee's design and science research. She will discuss how science is communicated to the public, how it can be misunderstood, why this matters and how designers could help to address the issue. The lecture will seek to dispel the common misconception amongst scientists that design is similar to art. It will then propose ideas for how design expertise in the arts could benefit communication of the sciences, whilst pointing out where the limitations lie. Projects will be presented that are sourced from live practice-based design work and from teaching workshops run at Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design in collaboration with Imperial College.
